WNBA Betting Preview: Liberty At Lynx Could Be Star Of Late Slate

Written By Calvin Wetzel on August 15, 2021

Who’s ready for some WNBA basketball again? The schedule is set, and for the first time this season, bettors have six games to choose from. Earlier, we took a look at the first three games of the day. Let’s dive into the WNBA odds, data, and trends for the later games.

This is the first action post-Olympic break for all six of these teams, so they should be well-rested outside of the players who participated in the Olympics. Bettors should also take into account that teams may show some rust as well, though, too.

WNBA odds for Atlanta Dream at Phoenix Mercury (6 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network)

After a tumultuous offseason that included an ownership change as well as a late coaching change, the Dream drama has spilled over into the regular season. On July 24, interim head coach Mike Peterson announced that he was stepping down. Atlanta has since handed the interim tag to assistant coach Darius Taylor.

Chaos aside, this matchup may look favorable for Phoenix at first glance. The Mercury, at 11-7 (with one push), sit just behind the Sun for the second-best record against the spread this season.

A closer look at the numbers reveals that the Dream may have a betting edge of their own. As road underdogs Atlanta has posted a league-best record of 6-2 against the spread, covering by an average of 2.44 points.

New York Liberty at Minnesota Lynx (7 p.m. ET, Facebook)

The Liberty opened the season as moneyline darlings, winning five of their first six games without being favored in any of them. As injuries and regression have taken over, New York has come back down to earth, but it still has been the third-most profitable team on the moneyline at +2.24 units.

The Lynx were overlooked in their own way, as they opened the preseason with +2500 odds to win the championship on PointsBet Sportsbook despite upgrading their roster through free agency after finishing in the top four in 2020. Sportsbooks seem to have caught on, as Minnesota now holds the fourth-shortest championship odds at PointsBet (+700).

This will be the first meeting between these two teams since May 18, when New York came away with a surprising double-digit win as five-point underdogs.

Indiana Fever at Los Angeles Sparks (9 p.m. ET, League Pass)

The nightcap will feature two teams struggling to stay out of the basement. The Fever sit in last place at 4-16, even after closing the first half on a three-game winning streak, and the Sparks are tied with the Dream one spot ahead.

Los Angeles is expected to get Nneka Ogwumike back after the star forward missed two months due to injury, so sportsbooks will have to adjust their lines accordingly.

The real value for bettors in this game might lie in the over/unders. The total scores in Sparks games have been 7.32 points lower than the posted lines on average, which is the lowest total in the league. The Fever own the third-lowest total at 2.85 points below the totals.

A month off can change things, and sportsbooks may adjust, but so far these two teams have played several far lower-scoring games than the sportsbooks have expected.
