California Derby Occupies Saturday NWSL Betting Markets

Written By Antonio Maza on July 9, 2022

The two NWSL clubs from California meet each other this Saturday in the NWSL for the first time in a regular-season match. FanDuel has markets on the match, which begins at 10:30 p.m. EDT from Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.

FanDuel has San Diego Wave FC as its favorite on its 3-way moneyline for this match that bettors can catch on Paramount+, with odds of either an Angel City FC win at full time or a draw sitting the same. A look at the clubs’ recent forms reveals where the betting opportunities are.

Recent form for Angel City, San Diego

San Diego went undefeated in two Challenge Cup matches against Angel City, scoring five goals over the two matches. That tied the most goals scored against a single opponent over two 2022 Challenge Cup games.

Angel City just ended a two-match goalless streak at home on Friday. The club has four goals in its six regular-season home matches this season, with only Gotham FC having fewer.

San Diego is unbeaten in its last five appearances, scoring 10 times in that stretch. Both of these clubs will be without some key players on Saturday night, though, due to international team absences. However, some of the players who will be on the pitch tonight are impactful as well.

No Alex Morgan? No problem

Savannah McCaskill has scored each of Angel City’s last three goals and it looks like this could be a breakout season for her. The three goals match her career-high for a single season in her rookie campaign of 2018.

Christen Westphal and Marleen Schimmer had the assists on the Wave’s last two goals. Since May 15, 11 of the Wave’s 13 goals have been assisted (the other two were PKs). Westphal has two assists in that stretch, which matches her two total regular-season assists from 2016-2021.

San Diego needs three points to maintain its hold on the top of the NWSL table and Angel City would love to start off this Derby series with a home win. Even for non-bettors, this one should be worth staying up for.
