Four Saturday NWSL Matches To Bet Upon

Written By Antonio Maza on June 4, 2022

An action-packed Saturday arrives with four matches for NWSL bettors to consider spending parts of their bankrolls on. While that means all but two of the league’s clubs will be in action today, not all of these matches are created equal for betting purposes.

A look at each match and the trends evident for the matchups does reveal some apparent opportunities. At the same time, each bettor must evaluate them in the context of their own interest.

How to watch, odds, and schedule for Saturday

Both of Saturday’s earlier matches are available on Twitch while the later matches can be viewed on Paramount+. All times below are Eastern Daylight Savings and the 3-way moneyline odds are from BetMGM.

  • OL Reign (+12o) at Chicago Red Stars (+195), 3 p.m. (Draw +220)
  • Washington Spirit (+130) at NJ/NY Gotham FC (+200), 7 p.m. (Draw +190)
  • North Carolina Courage (+150) at Racing Louisville FC (+150), 8 p.m. (Draw +210)
  • San Diego Wave FC (+110) at Kansas City Current (+180), 8:30 p.m. (Draw +260)

The day begins with a contest between two clubs that have both enjoyed home-pitch advantages over the other in their series.

Can Chicago maintain its home point streak?

Meeting for the first time in 2022, the home side has had the upper hand in the fixture since the Red Stars and Reign first met in 2013. Chicago has won seven of the 11 matches it has hosted while they have lost half of their 12 regular-season matches in the state of Washington.

OL Reign earned its fourth consecutive clean sheet with a 1-0 win over San Diego Wave FC on Sunday. It is the third time in club history that the club has not allowed a goal in at least four straight matches as one of the other streaks was one of two occasions in NWSL history that a club has a five-match such streak (Reign-2016, Courage-2021).

In OL Reign’s win over the Wave, Sofia Huerta delivered an assist for the second straight match and now has eight assists since the beginning of last season, which leads NWSL in that span (along with Trinity Rodman). Huerta is looking for an assist in three consecutive matches for the second time in her career (September 5 – October 11, 2021) as she is currently the only Reign player ever to do so in a single season.

Should bettors back off the Spirit Saturday?

When it comes to this match, bettors should note that the visitors have many players out due to COVID protocol, including Rodman. For that reason, it might be wise to wait on this match until the lineups come out.

Gotham FC and Washington have played 30 matches against each other in all NWSL competitions with the Spirit having won 13 of those. The only fixture that has seen more matches in all NWSL competitions is the Thorns against the Reign (33).

After winning its regular season opener, the Spirit are winless in their last league five matches. Washington joins FC Kansas City in 2016 as the only club to win one or fewer matches through their first six matches of the season after winning the NWSL Championship.

Ifeoma Onumonu scored in the 57th minute for the lone goal in Gotham FC’s 1-0 win over Angel City FC on Sunday. It was the first time Gotham FC had scored a goal after halftime this season and their one total second-half goal is tied for the fewest in the league this season with Angel City.

Sam Staab scored in the 86th minute to secure a 1-1 draw against Chicago on Wednesday. The goal was the latest match-tying goal scored by the Spirit in a league match since Mallory Pugh scored a 90th-minute penalty kick in a 2-2 draw against Orlando in July 2017.

Will Courage secure desperately-needed points?

North Carolina has a must-win match in their hopes to straighten up their season against Racing Louisville. The Courage dominated the matchup in 2021, winning all three matches with a combined score of 10-1.

North Carolina is the only club to score at least 10 goals while conceding only one in a three-match span (in a single season) against a single opponent in NWSL history, having also done so against the Pride in 2019.

Racing Louisville had scored in every match this season until losing 1-0 against the Kansas City Current on Monday. The five-match streak with a goal scored is the longest within a single season in Louisville’s brief history with Orlando being the only other club this season with a five-match goal streak.

Diana Ordoñez scored the first regular-season goal of her NWSL career on Sunday against the Dash. Ordoñez is the second-youngest player to score a goal in NWSL history (born on September 26, 2001), older than only Rodman.

How will first-ever meeting of the Current and Wave play out?

San Diego and Kansas City have never played against one another in any NWSL competition. The Current have four points in three regular season matches while hosting clubs from the Pacific time zone but have only scored one goal in those three matches.

Kansas City snapped an eight-match streak in league play without a clean sheet, going back to last season, en route to their first win of the 2022 regular season against Louisville on Monday. Last year, the Current went nine straight matches without a clean sheet, the only longer streak in club history.

All four of San Diego’s road matches this season have ended in a 1-0 scoreline with the Wave winning two and losing two. The four combined goals are the fewest ever for an NWSL club through their first four away matches of a season.
