Cascadia Derby Highlights Three Sunday NWSL Matches

Written By Antonio Maza on July 10, 2022

A renewal of the Cascadia Derby brings a curtain to the 10th matchday of the NWSL regular season. As bettors and fans prepare for a full evening of action in the league, it’s worth noting the betting opportunities at legal Canadian and US sportsbooks.

One of the matches for today has an interesting 3-way moneyline opportunity given the club’s recent forms and available rosters. It’s up to each bettor to size up the markets for themselves, though.

How to watch, schedule, and the lines for Sunday

All times below are Eastern Daylight Savings. The lines are from PointsBet and valid as of noon EDT on Sunday.

  • Kansas City Current (+230) at Washington Spirit (+125), 5 p.m., Paramount+ (Draw +230)
  • North Carolina Courage (+420) at Chicago Red Stars (-170), 6 p.m., Paramount+ (Draw +325)
  • Portland Thorns FC (+220) at OL Reign (+130), 6 p.m., Twitch (Draw +230)

With 2022 Euros, Copa América, and the CONCACAF W Championship all happening simultaneously, there are a lot of players missing from these rosters.

Is this the day that Kansas City feels a winning spirit?

The Spirit have won both all-time meetings between these clubs, securing 2-1 victories in each match. While all four of Washington’s goalscorers from those games are still on the roster, only one isn’t currently with the U.S. Women’s National Team, Tara McKeown.

Washington’s winless run ran to 10 straight league appearances in its last match. It is the eighth time an NWSL team has gone at least 10 consecutive matches without a win in a single regular season with the Spirit having done so a league-high three different times (2013 and 2018).

Kansas City earned its first-ever road win in NWSL league play with a 2-1 victory at Houston on Friday. With fewer key players missing due to international duty, this match could be an opportunity to make some cash.

Chicago looks to continue home dominance

The last time these teams met in the regular season, North Carolina shut out Chicago for the first time in a regular-season match. However, Chicago has never lost at home in the regular season to the Courage, winning five of the six meetings.

The Red Stars have shut out their opponents in three straight home matches, tying their longest such streak in team history. The only other team with a run of three straight shutouts at home this season is OL Reign, who have kept clean sheets in five straight.

North Carolina has lost two consecutive matches, adding to the three straight to begin the season. The five losses in eight appearances are the most in Courage history through that number of matches.

Both of these clubs are missing key talent on international duty but sportsbooks give a ton of weight to the Red Stars’ home advantage in this one regardless.

OL Reign, Portland renew Cascadia Derby series

After winning its first two road Cascadia Derby matches in the NWSL’s inaugural season of 2013, the Thorns have won just one regular-season match in Washington since then. OL Reign’s eight wins against the Thorns are tied for the most home wins against a single opponent in league history.

The Reign earned their second consecutive shutout win with a 2-0 victory over the Courage on Friday. It was the club’s fourth clean sheet win this season, tied for most in NWSL but their first time scoring multiple goals while having a shutout in 2022.

While sportsbooks certainly favor OL Reign due to its home advantage in this one, the absence of key players on both sides of this match makes it interesting.
