NWSL Betting Weekend Whiparound: Ashlyn Harris Is Ridiculous And Deciphering The Red Stars

Written By Derek Helling on July 30, 2021

The Olympic quarterfinals and semifinals matches have all the hype. There are still NWSL betting markets for your consideration of which wagers are wisest for your budget, though. The league does not observe a break for the games and thus this weekend has all 10 clubs in action.

In breaking down the odds at legal sportsbooks in the US, handicapping demands a look at Orlando Pride keeper Ashlyn Harris‘ brilliance and an attempt to figure out the Chicago Red Stars. Regardless of how and whether you bet, the action is worth checking out amidst your Tokyo viewing.

Several operators are carrying the torch with NWSL markets for this weekend’s matches. Here’s the schedule for the weekend, with all times Eastern. Fans can view all matches on Paramount+ unless otherwise noted.

  • Orlando Pride at North Carolina Courage, 7 p.m. Saturday, July 31
  • Racing Louisville FC at OL Reign on Twitch, 10 p.m. Saturday
  • Kansas City at Portland Thorns FC, 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1
  • Washington Spirit at Chicago Red Stars, 6 p.m. Sunday
  • NJ/NY Gotham FC at Houston Dash, 7 p.m. Sunday

The first match of the weekend might represent the best possible value for bettors. That’s if you put a lot of stock in Harris’ continued ability to stymie opposing offenses despite a barrage of attacks.

The 3-way moneyline on Orlando just sitting there

As fans have been discovering all season so far, these aren’t your mother’s Orlando Pride. Orlando is just a point off playoff pace and has collected the third-most wins in the league. Harris is a huge reason why.

The Pride are nearly even in goal differential (-1) because of her 37 saves. In the most recent meeting between these two clubs, Harris made seven saves against nine North Carolina shots on goal. If Harris can continue her stellar play, Orlando might be able to extend the Courage‘s losing streak during which North Carolina has only scored once.

An even more perplexing enigma than Harris is for opposing offenses is the Red Stars as a club this season. The close odds on Sunday’s match tell the story.

Good luck prognosticating the Chicago-Washington match

How does a club with a goal differential of -5 have the second-most wins in the league and occupy a playoff spot in the current standings? Benefit from opponents’ own goals and have most of the goals allowed come in bunches rather than spread out evenly across its matches, that’s how.

For example, Chicago allowed five goals in its regular-season opener, then a mere two over its next four matches. The Red Stars have won three of their last four times out, including against this same Washington Spirit club on July 2. That proceeded a stretch of two losses and a draw in four matches, though.

That’s why there isn’t much room between sides of the 3-way moneyline on this match. The potential payout on a draw isn’t that great, either.
